Donating Travel Miles for the Amazon Rainforest 

The initiative “Little Climate Protectors on the Move!” helps protect the climate not only in Europe, but worldwide. The children’s collected travel miles can be turned into donations for the Amazon Climate Fund, which was launched by the Climate Alliance in summer 2023. Every euro supports the Wampís, an Indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon, in protecting their homeland, culture and therefore the rainforest itself. 

How does it work?

It’s very simple: help the children find sponsors who agree to donate a certain amount ,for example €0.10, for every mile collected. Sponsors can be parents, grandparents, other relatives, friends, neighbors, or even local businesses, municipal companies, banks, etc. 

Without Indigenous peoples, there will soon be no rainforest

Recent studies show that the territories of Indigenous partners and national protected areas are essential for preserving the Amazon rainforest. Together, they cover almost 50% of the Amazon region. About half of the intact rainforest is located on Indigenous land an area larger than Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Norway, and Spain combined.

Indigenous peoples and the forests in their territories play a crucial role in regional and global climate protection, in fighting poverty, hunger, and malnutrition, and in preserving cultural diversity. They are also vital for the global water cycle. 

Taking responsibility together with the Climate Fund

The Climate Alliance Climate Fund supports projects by Indigenous partners that protect rainforests and improve living conditions through a holistic development approach.
In 2023, the first project was launched in cooperation with the Wampís. About 16,000 people live in 85 communities across 13,000 km² of land. This area stores over 145 million tons of carbon, and around 57 million tons of CO₂ are added each year.

Planned project activities include:

• Reforestation of deforested and degraded land,
• Improvement of familiy gardens
• Strengthening cultural identity among children and young people. 

The total project cost is €74,600.

In December 2023, the first project phase was funded with €10,000, nearly €2,000 of which came from donated travel miles. A big thank-you to everyone who made this possible!
